Activated Charcoal is the new Black.
Q: What’s the scoop with all the charcoal skin care products? Is it the same charcoal that we have in our BBQ’s?
A: No, it’s not the same charcoal in our BBQ’s. The charcoal used in skin care is called “activated charcoal”. It’s a black powder that has no taste or odor and it’s a form of charcoal (usually from wood) that has been heated in order to increase its absorbency. Its chief benefit is its ability to grab and bind substances. In years gone by it was actually used in hospitals as an alternative to stomach pumping as it was effective in grabbing alcohol, drugs, and poisons.
Now in modern times, turns out that charcoal is an excellent ingredient in skincare. It is extremely effective in drawing oil, dirt, chemicals, poisons, and micro-particles to the surface of the skin where they can then be washed away. Activated charcoal powder is proven to absorb harmful substances, thousands of times its own mass, which makes it a great choice in facial masks and cleansers.
